Charleston Single House Birdhouse

I only had a week to do this and had to lock myself in my studio.  I am a licensed tour guide for the city of Charleston and learned the history of this type of house that was developed in the early 1700's, the “Single House” is uniquely Charleston . It is so named because it is only a single room wide. Being narrow enticed breezes to blow through the rooms. Porches or “piazzas” as they are called run the length of the house on either the south or the west to also utilize the breezes.

There is a doorway, “false entrance” opening on the street. On this house you see that the piazza is adorned with ferns in hanging baskets and there is a watchful kitten on the rail. The front and the side with the piazza are elaborate while the other sides are less so. The right side of the house only has one widow. This is called a “north side manner” and gives privacy to the neighbor who also has a piazza. Many Charleston houses are stucco over brick and on this house some of the stucco is missing showing the bricks underneath. This house has earthquake bolts between the windows that were used to repair the houses after the great earthquake of 1886.

If you know a bird lover, this house makes an excellent gift that will be enjoyed and remembered for many years.

This birdhouse is weatherproof and can sit flat or be mounted on a pole and he bottom is removable for cleaning. 9" x 9" x 12",   approximately 5 lbs.
