Kaye Penegar

Kaye started her art career after winning a coloring contest in first grade. During her childhood she took lessons and completed many paintings. Kaye graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in art. After college, she worked in advertising at the Post and Courier in Charleston.

In 1992 Kaye and her husband, sculptor and painter Scott Penegar, moved to the old city of San Juan, Puerto Rico. There she studied with the prominent artist Jan D'Esopo. The couple lived in the Caribbean for 3 years and, after a 6-month vacation in Europe, returned to Charleston .

Back home, Kaye took time off to start a family. After having a son and a daughter, Kaye is now devoting more time to her art.

A very prolific painter, Kaye draws inspiration from her low country environment. Focusing on acrylic painting, she is known for her use of light and color and meticulous attention to detail. Kaye has painted several murals and her paintings are found in many private collections. She has also received two Purchase awards for her sculpture at the Atalaya Arts Festival.  Most recently, Kaye completed a commission for a large marsh painting now on display in the Adult Learning Center, Summerville, South Carolina.
